Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Supernatural dramedy brilliantly written over 7 seasons. It centered around a young teenager, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who discovered she is the chosen one to keep the vampires and monsters at bay in the hub of all dark forces, Sunnydale, CA. She was joined by her teacher/mentor Rupert Giles (Anthony Head), her best friends Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and a slew of other entertaining characters, both friend and foe, human and monster.

In season 4 Willow lost her boyfriend, Oz (a werewolf, played by Seth Green) and gained a girlfriend, Tara (a fellow witch, played by Amber Benson). Lucky girl... for a time. Their love saw major ups and downs, including a tragic ending that sent Willow to the dark side. Willow and Tara's love story was sweet and troubled. The series didn't show them kissing much, but they got away with a lot by using the metaphor of magic to imply that there was more than spell making going on between them. In the final season, however, Willow got a new girlfriend, Kennedy (Iyari Limon). The end was near for the series, so they dared to show these two women 'getting it on' more openly.

In my opinion the writing is the true star of this clever television series. Joss Whedon (creator/producer/writer/director) ingeniously spun a complex web of character development and story development that seemed almost flawless in its continuity. Nothing was ever extraneous. Nothing out of place. Yet always with a feeling of spontaneity. It was witty and morose, modern and gothic, natural and unnatural.
