Once and Again (1999-2002)
One of the best TV dramas ever. Brilliant writing; an incredible cast; believable, meaningful storylines; this was an ensemble
show about the merging of two families through the marriage of Lily Manning
(Sela Ward) and Rick Sammler
(Bill Campbell).
It's a crime the show was canceled when it was. After only 3 seasons, the show was still going strong with quality and inspiration.
Not the least of which was the progressive journey of young Jessie Sammler
(Even Rachel Wood). She had had a tough
two years fighting low self-esteem and anorexia. Finally in therapy and developing into a creative and intelligent young woman,
the 3rd season saw Jessie meet a soul mate in Katie Singer
(Mischa Barton).
The two teenagers became fast friends only to discover that their feelings for one another went deeper than mere friendship.
And just when they were both coming to terms with these feelings, and enjoying the adventure of first love, the show was
canceled.
So we'll never know how their relationship developed, how long it lasted, or even how and when Jessie 'came out' to her parents,
Rick and Karen (Susanna Thompson).
For in the finale episode, Jessie and Katie's relationship was known only by step-sister
Grace Manning (Julia Whelan).
This is one of my all time favorite television shows.
